Hi, I'm Andres.
I build little apps and launch them into orbit.

Senior software engineer in Brooklyn. By day I work on Azure Databricks at Microsoft. By night I work on ships bound for orbit: small apps I want to exist, built under Ships in Orbit Studio.

ON THE LAUNCH PAD

BangumiBoard

The anime calendar that knows your streaming service: when each episode you follow is actually watchable, in your time zone.

FairSplit

A group expense splitter that never limits how many expenses you can add.

IN THE HANGAR

AlleyScan

Scan every booth's QR code at a con.

Hatchling

A to-do list your dragon runs on.

Appraise

Scan a trading card, see what it's worth.

ShipKit

An AI-built app from a GitHub repo to an approved App Store listing.

TurnTimer

Board game turn timer and chess clock.

Shipframe

Code changes into branded clips and GIFs.

Microsoft

JAN 2021 – NOW

Senior Software Engineer, Azure Databricks

FEB 2026 – NOW
  • Redesigned the backfill system that runs on up to 100K workspaces per region, with staged rollout, safe retries, and pause and rollback.
  • Created AI agents that investigate backfill issues and summarize status across regions.
  • Migrated all 9 Knockout portal blades to React using AI coding agents, taking unit test coverage from 0% to 80%.
  • Added a 50+ scenario Playwright suite that blocks failing release candidates in CI and runs against production.
  • Moved new workspaces to Access Connectors with managed identity and turned off SAS-key storage access.

Senior Software Engineer, Entra External ID and Azure AD B2C

JUN 2025 – FEB 2026

Software Engineer, same team · JAN 2021 – JUN 2025

  • Shipped the External ID tenant lifecycle APIs and portal experience from preview to GA, with 100K+ tenants created.
  • Launched the 30-day free trial with no credit card needed, bringing in about 1,000 sign-ups a month.
  • Helped build an AI analyzer (Azure AI Foundry, OpenAI GPT models) that reads B2C policies and reports what can move to External ID.
  • Created a reusable React wizard on Fluent UI v9, used by several teams for 5+ flows. New flows take hours, not days.
  • Replaced manual testing with a Playwright end-to-end framework, saving over $10K a month.
  • Implemented OAuth 2.0 token minting for Custom Authentication Extensions, and moved the service onto Microsoft's central auth package.

Boeing

JUL 2018 – JAN 2021

Reliability Engineer

  • Analyzed airline in-service data to optimize customers' maintenance programs; accepted recommendations saved them millions of dollars.

about.txt

In my past life I studied aeronautical and mechanical engineering at Rensselaer and spent two and a half years at Boeing as a reliability engineer, which is a fancy way of saying I worried about planes so you didn't have to. Then I finished a CS degree at Oregon State and moved into software, where the stakes are lower and the bugs are mine.

Since 2021 I've worked at Microsoft on Entra External ID and Azure AD B2C, and now Azure Databricks. Along the way I've worked on REST API development for Microsoft Graph and ARM APIs, microservice system design, Azure portal UX, authentication flows such as SAML and OIDC / OAuth 2.0, and security hardening.

Ships in Orbit Studio is where I build small apps I want to exist. I've always loved coding and tinkering, and personal projects are where that curiosity gets to ship.

Away from the keyboard I'm into photography, gaming and video editing, and I'm learning to draw and to 3D print.
